Balgown Croft
The Captain’s Place is situated in the grounds of a traditional Scottish croft and the croft's history is deeply intertwined with the land and its traditional uses. While specific records of the barn's construction are limited, the presence of an old mill on the property suggests a longstanding connection to local industry. Mills in the area have historically been centres of activity, often serving as hubs for the community. The ruins of a mill on the croft, believed to be around in the 1800's, stands as a testament to the long legacy of the croft.
The croft is once again a thriving, productive space. During your stay, you'll find yourself surrounded by 200 laying hens, a herd of dairy goats, and rare breed pigs, all working in harmony to produce high-quality goods and contribute to the regeneration of the land. We follow regenerative farming practices on the croft, so local wildlife is always welcome and during your stay you may see rabbits, moles, all the numerous insects, various species of birds including buzzards, owls, sea eagles and the occasional Golden Eagle, frogs, newts, bats and voles as they all too have their homes on the croft.
You are welcome to immerse yourself in croft life as much—or as little—as you like. Join us at feeding time to meet the animals, or simply relax and enjoy the tranquility of your private retreat. The choice is yours!
